Present: Jerry Ford, Rocky Stoltz, Ryan Jilek, Jeremiah Thorpe, Burke Gardner, Dale Sattler, Alan Church and Jon Stika.
Beer of the Month from Town & Country Liquors was Cowboy Coffee Porter from Big Sky Brewing, Missoula, MT. This beer was smooth, slightly sweet & roasty with a subtle tart coffee finish. A little light on body, but a nice marriage of coffee with the Porter style of beer.
Reviewed correspondence from C&W Crate Co. who is offering a free polypropylene beer case to homebrew clubs who will evaluate them and provide a review. Jon replied to them that the HRHB would be interested in evaluating a case. C&W replied that they will determine who to send cases to by the end of February.
Jon reported that the HRHB are listed on the AHA website as a club in ND. Some discussion was heard about joining the AHA and receiving Zymurgy magazine. No decision or motion was made regarding this issue.
Discussed hop variety and hop growing as possible club research projects that could utilize USDA grant money. Jon will look into this further and draft an abstract for possible submission.
Discussed holding two meetings per month instead of one. Agreement among those present was that March would not work very well for most members to have two meetings and this topic should be revisited at the regular March meeting.
Discussed DSU Foundation Brews & Blues event and the role the HRHB might play in it. Ryan is the HRHB delegate to the Brews & Blues committee. Ryan reported that the next B&B committee meeting was scheduled for March 8th. Ryan also reported that he was asked by the committee if the HRHB would be willing to bring some beer that members had brewed, perform a brewing demonstration and assist Hawk’s Point residents with brewing some beer for the event. Ryan (and possibly Jon) will plan to attend the next committee meeting in March to determine how the HRHB would be involved in the B&B event.
Rocky brought a coffee stout, Alan brought Guinea Stout and Imperial Stout, Ryan brought Pale Ale, Jon brought Oatmeal Stout, Jeremiah brought Belgian Wit, Dale brought Stagecoach Smoked Porter from Mantorville Brewing of Mantorville, MN.
